Treatments For PTSD
Virginia J. Duffy PhD, NPP
There are a number of different treatments for PTSD. They
all aim to decrease the uncomfortable symptoms being experienced by those
with PTSD. They can all be helpful.
One of the main goals of treatment for PTSD is to help the person recognize
and talk about the event. Talking about something traumatic can seem to
worsen things at first and is often very hard to do. This is why so many
people with PTSD avoid reminders and counseling. Over the long run however
not talking about it may make the symptoms worse. Talking helps the person
with PTSD take control of the symptoms and decrease the power they have in
his/her life.
Talk therapy can be done using different models of treatment such as
cognitive behavioral therapy, relationship therapy, crisis intervention and
more.
Other therapies such as desensitization and EMDR are less about talk
although this is a part of almost all treatments.
Medications can be helpful for some symptoms of PTSD such as anxiety or
depression.
