Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms
Symptoms of PTSD
Virginia J. Duffy PhD NPP
The symptoms of PTSD vary with the patient. They all do
not have to be present all the time. In order to make an accurate diagnosis
symptoms must be explored in detailed and fit the criteria as defined by the
DSM 4 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual). The basic symptoms of PTSD are
listed below. For more in-depth understanding and further detail see the
articles that follow.
• A history of a traumatic event is present
• Memories of this event are frequent
• Nightmares occur regarding this event
• Flashbacks are present
• The person avoids thinking or talking about the event.
• Hyperarousal is common
• People with PTSD often feel isolated and distant from others
