What is Bipolar Disorder?
The diagnosis of Bipolar disorder can be confusing for
professionals and the public alike.
First there are two VERY different types of bipolar disorder, Bipolar I and
Bipolar II. These are very different diagnoses and I believe the powers that
be did not do anyone any service by combining them. Both the symptoms and
the treatment are very different.
In addition, Bipolar Disorder diagnosis seems to be a used very loosely and
frequently these days; it is the diagnosis du jour. I think it is overused
and often made much too quickly and casually. It is also made by those who
are not qualified to do so.
Hopefully the articles that follow will help clarify the complicated
diagnoses of Bipolar disorder. As always, remember this is a label and just
words, it is not destiny!
